Managing money on the road doesn’t have to be stressful. In fact, travelling through Southeast Asia can be surprisingly affordable once you understand how things work. From the vibrant night markets of Thailand to the riverside cafés of Laos, good value and warm hospitality go hand in hand.
At Baktrax, we’ve been travelling these roads for decades. Here’s our guide to keeping your money safe, stretching your budget further, and making the most of every kip, baht, or dong.
Know Your Currencies
Each country in Southeast Asia has its own currency — and exchange rates can shift often.
- Thailand: Thai Baht (THB)
- Laos: Lao Kip (LAK)
- Cambodia: US Dollar (USD) and Cambodian Riel (KHR)
- Vietnam: Vietnamese Dong (VND)
- Malaysia: Malaysian Ringgit (MYR)
In Cambodia, prices are quoted in US dollars, but small change often comes back in riel. It might feel confusing at first, but you’ll get used to juggling both quickly!
Cash is Still King
While card payments are becoming more common, cash remains the easiest way to pay — especially in smaller towns or local markets. ATMs are widely available across most of Southeast Asia, though rural areas may have fewer.
Always carry a mix of notes in good condition — torn or damaged notes are sometimes refused. And when exchanging money, official banks or licensed money changers offer the fairest rates.
Avoiding Hidden Fees
A few small habits can save you a surprising amount. Withdraw larger amounts less frequently to reduce ATM charges, and always choose to be charged in the local currency rather than your home currency — the bank’s exchange rate will almost always be better.
Many travellers also find that prepaid travel cards or fee-free bank accounts make managing money abroad much simpler.
Budgeting on the Road
One of the best things about travelling in Southeast Asia is how far your money goes. You can enjoy delicious meals, comfortable accommodation, and incredible experiences without overspending.
- Meals: From £1 for a bowl of noodles to £10 for a full restaurant meal.
- Accommodation: £15–£40 for clean, comfortable local stays.
- Transport: Buses and trains offer excellent value, often under £10 for multi-hour journeys.
Our small-group tours are designed around local value — not luxury resorts — meaning you experience the real region while keeping your budget balanced.
Tipping and Local Etiquette
Tipping isn’t mandatory in most of Southeast Asia, but it’s always appreciated. Round up bills or leave a small note for good service. In restaurants or with guides, 5–10% is generous.
In some rural areas, people might be shy about accepting tips, so a warm thank-you or small gift can mean just as much.
Staying Safe with Your Money
Petty theft is rare but possible anywhere. Keep large sums split between a money belt and your day bag, and use hotel safes when available. Take photos of important cards and store them securely online, just in case.
Baktrax tours are small and friendly, and your local guide will always be happy to help with exchange points, budgeting tips, or emergency advice.
Travel Smart, Spend Wisely
Travelling through Southeast Asia isn’t about how much you spend — it’s about how you spend it. Supporting local businesses, eating street food, and using public transport all keep your money in the community while giving you a richer, more authentic experience.
At Baktrax, that’s the kind of value we believe in — real experiences, not tourist traps.
