Malaysia might just have the easiest entry rules in Southeast Asia! Here’s everything you need for a smooth entry in 2025.
Visa-Free Entry (Most Common Route)
- UK, US, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, EU, Japan, South Korea:
- Visa-free for up to 90 days
- Visa-free for up to 90 days
- ASEAN countries:
- Visa-free for 30 days (sometimes 14 days)
- Visa-free for 30 days (sometimes 14 days)
By Air or Land: Same rules for both! Entry and exit are a breeze at airports, overland from Thailand or Singapore, or by ferry.
E-Visa or Embassy Visa (Rarely Needed)
- For a few nationalities (India, China, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka)
- Apply online: Malaysia eVisa.
- Fee: Varies by nationality
Not needed for the UK, US, AU, CA, EU, NZ, Japan, South Korea, and most Western travelers
Visa Extensions & Overstays
- Tourist visas are rarely extendable except in very special cases (medical, emergencies).
Overstaying can mean fines, blacklisting, or being denied re-entry—always check your entry stamp!
Required Documents
- Passport valid 6+ months
- Proof of onward travel
Sufficient funds (rarely checked, but the official guideline is RM 2,000 or local equivalent)
Land vs. Air Entry
- Both are simple—just ensure you get your passport stamped properly on entry and exit.
